Working nine to five, what a way to make a living, Barely getting by, It's all taking and no giving
Kellie drummed her fingers on the counter as she flipped through a smith brother's catalog. She was supposed to be making a list of things to order, like her boss ahd told her, but instead she was looking at things for herself. Like a new Charmayne James Saddle. But that was the norm, Kel not doing her work. She didn't even know why she had this silly job, it's not like she needed it. Her parents were loaded, but Kellie wanted to learn to make it on her own, and thats waht she had to keep reminding herself when she got in a slump like this. And besides, it wasn't so bad wokring. Kellie got a 15% discount for working at Quarter Acres, and boy did she use it. She almost never shopped anywhere else. Just because she had money didn't mean that she didn't enjoy wearing and buying the simpler things in life.
S he glanced upward from where she had been flipping through the catalog when the bell rang on the door, letting her know that someone had just walked through the door. She couldn't see who it was at first, because of a rack full of impossibly large show saddles blocking her view of the door. Kellie brushed it off, it was probably some old cowboy coming to get a halter, or a little girl with her grandma coming to look at the extensive collection of breyer horses. But when the man rounded the corner, Kellie half choed on the swedish fish she had been eating. The guy who had jsut walked through the door was the hottest guy she had seen in here all week. And that was saying something, seeing as JR Knott and Cody Jones had been in there two days ago. She sat up and smiled as the guy started to walk her way. In every way, he was gorgeous. His glinting white teeth, his brown hair tucked under a black felt cowboy hat; it was no wonder Kellie couldn't stop staring.
A
s the guy walked her way, Kel tried to look some place else, so she didn't look like a freak. When he reashed her, she put her Swedish Fish box in her purse, and closed the catalog she had been looking at. With cautiousness, just so that she wouldn't fall and embarass herself, Kelly carefully hopped down from the stool she had been sitting on. She leaned up against the counter, and smiled politely at the man. "How can I help you?" she shriveled inside at what she had just said, It had been so lame. I mean, who says that? And plus, she was trying to figure out where she knew this guy from. He looked so familiar. And then it dawned on her. It was Conner O'Malley. The Conner O'Malley. The bullrdier Conner O'Malley, who had just won at the rodeo a few nights before. He was standing right in front of Kellie, and she was being a tool. ---notes!: haha, bad post. tagged!: conner! outfit!: SAYiWON'T shirt, cruel girl jeans, brown justin boots, silver hoop earrings. lyrics!: nine to five - dolly parton[/blockquote][/blockquote]

. it was an innocent enough request, and conner felt stupid for even hoping that she was as flustered by him as he was by her. he nodded and touched the brim of his hat before replying. "uh, hi. could you show me where the jewelry is? i think it was over here last time i was in here." he gestured to the general area where the jewelry had been last time, which was now a rack of breyer horses. he looked back to her, catching her gaze and smiling again. the room started to feel unnaturally hot, and conner rubbed one hand behind his neck in the quiet. she looked really bored, and he was glad that his job was working the rodeo circuit. it was really good pay when you won, and conner wasn't sure what he would have done money-wise if he didn't win that last rodeo. he hated the thought of being cooped up in a store or office all day, and that's what a job was to him, the absence of freedom. thinking about jobs had brought his mind back to his childhood, when his family had strayed from the path of football glory. his mom had always encouraged him to chase the dream of rodeo, for some reason thinking it was less dangerous than football. of course that made absolutely no sense, but that was her thinking. seeing her other two sons grow up breaking bones and spraining ankles had convinced her that conner would not be a football player. she had taken him to so many rodeos when he was little that conner had gotten bit by the bullriding bug before he was 6. conner's dad knew that bullriding was extremely dangerous, way more so than football, but hadn't discouraged conner or his mother. his dad had gotten his fill of his sons being in the football limelight, and was content to let conner try out his wings at something else. the bell over the door chimed again, both waking conner out of his walk down memory lane and announcing the arrival of a new customer. conner's eyes drifted to see one of the barrel racers from the rodeo come into the store, looking picture perfect. she walked with a sashaying motion and her shiny new cowboy boots made delicate noises against the carpet. conner rolled his eyes to look back at the salesclerk, wondering if she was annoyed by how barbie-doll-ish the newcomer was. he didn't know if she caught his eyeroll, but before he could investigate further the girl had walked up to stand unnaturally close behind conner, waiting for the salesclerk to be finished and help her. suddenly the girl's voice whispered out, unnaturally breathy and girly. "hey connnnner. good job at the rodeo last weekend." he couldn't ignore the fact that she had spoken, and against his will the upbringing of a gentleman won over. he turned and touched the brim of his hat, smiling with a fake polite smile down at her. "hello." it sounded strange and forced, which it was, seeing as he didn't know her name and didn't want to get into an actual conversation. she giggled and twisted some of her bottle blonde hair around her finger, her eyelashes fake and her lipstick red. conner turned back around scooted closer to the counter subtly, widening his eyes at the salesclerk. his expression was now the picture of oh-my-gosh-she's-creeping-me-out. he didn't feel as awkward around the pretty salesclerk now that they were in cahoots against a common enemy, and the fake smile that he had had earlier transformed into a small real one. Working nine to five, what a way to make a living, Barely getting by, It's all taking and no giving
Kellie smiled and nodded as Conner talked about what he was looking for. She was glad that she had changed the display this morning, which would prolong the time he had to spend in the store. "Yeah, I'm pretty sure I know what your talking about. There right over--" But Kellie didn't get to finish her sentence. She turned to look at who hadjust walked in the door. Sure enough, it was some blonde barbie, who was trying to play cowgirl. Kellie rolled her eyes, just at the same time Conner did. She looked at him, and giggled, before the girl came up behind him, and was nearly on him talking in his ear. Kellie couldn't help but to laugh out loud when Conner turned back to look at her, with a look of horror and amusement on his face. Again, Kel couldn't help but to let out a little giggle. She turned to the barbie, who she wanted to get out of the way so she could talk to Conner. "Uhh, miss, can I help you?"
As Kellie waited for the girl's reponse, she walked out from behind the counter, and around it to Conner. She gestured for him to follow her as she spoke. "C'mon, I'll show you where the jewelry is." Kellie walked over to the clothing section of the store, which was settled in the back of the store, and stopped when she reached a wood table, that had an extensive selection of jewelry displayed on it. Kel gestured to it with her hand, and smiled amusingly at Conner. "Here's the jewelry, I'll be back in a second. Lemme go take care of barbie before she has a meltdown." Kellie giggled at the girl's expression, who has still standing by the counter, who looked like she had been done wrong, because Kel had taken care of Conner first.
K
ellie sauntered back over to the counter, so she could deal with Little Miss Sunshine. "Is there anything that I could help you with?" Kellie tried to be polite as possible, because, well, she didn't want to look like a jerk in front of Conner. But god, just looking at this girl made her sick. She looked like some of the girls at school, who had rich daddies, who were in the oil business, and were just playing cowgirl because they thought it looked like fun. Kellie really couldn't stand those kind of people. Just because her parents had money, it didn't make Kellie feel compelled to act in that manner. She would never, ever act like that. And she found it hilarious that Conner thought that this girl was a freak, just like she thought so. She found it less awkward to be around now, since they had a common goal, which was to stay away from this girl, who clearly was in love with Conner. Kellie waited patiently for the barbie girl's response. ---notes!: kinda short post, sorry. tagged!: conner obviously! outfit!: SAYiWON'T shirt, cruel girl jeans, brown justin boots, silver hoop earrings. lyrics!: nine to five - dolly parton[/blockquote][/blockquote]

he raised one of his hands to 'itch' above his lip while he hid his smile, and coughed to cover the almost-laugh. he heard the barbie scoff loudly and assumed she crossed her arms, but he wasn't about to turn and look. he looked up from the brim of his stetson to see the the clerk coming around the counter to stand next to him, and he felt obliged to stand a bit straighter as she approached. "C'mon, I'll show you where the jewelry is." conner followed her lead as she led him away from the creepy girl and towards the back of the store. they stopped before a large display of jewelry that was quite obvious now that he knew where it was. he looked over to the clerk and nodded in thanks, noticing again how her smile was contagious. "Here's the jewelry, I'll be back in a second. Lemme go take care of barbie before she has a meltdown." her way of describing the angry looking girl was perfect, and conner let out the pent up chuckle that was itching to be released. "thanks..."he waited until she had walked off to take care of the other girl before stepping forward to inspect the pieces. the one set of earrings that he had been looking for was near the middle of the display, and it took a few minutes for him to find it. when he did, he picked it up and turned to walk back towards the two girls, who looked as if they were about to come to blows; or at least the barbie did. her arms were folded viciously and her hip was thrust out, a pout on her lips. conner almost wished he would have been bright enough to not approach until she was gone, but he couldn't turn back now. the barbie caught sight of him returning and rushed over to him, appearing to be emotionally wounded by the clerk. "oh my gosh. was she this rude to you too? i'm going to need to see a manager." conner was confused about why this exclamation required her to cling to his arm, and subtly shook off her embrace by walking forward and a bit to the left to place the earrings on the counter. the barbie let out a whimper and turned on her heel, mumbling something about 'stupid, stupid bullriders'. conner's expression flashed in confusion about how her horrible experience had been his fault, but shook it off and turned to the clerk. he spoke with the same soft and unsure voice that he always did, one that would later command respect when he stood up to speak in church. "thanks for scaring off the... her." he nodded towards the general direction that the barbie had stormed off in. "i... uh... i'm conner. conner o'malley." he extended one of his calloused hands in greeting, a soft smile on his face. S
he couldn't help but to laugh as the girl turned on the heel of her finely polished boots, and flounced out the door the same way she had come in. Kellie shot a look of disgust the girl's way, and waggled her fingers in a sarcastic attempt of saying goodbye to the annoying girl. When she looked back at Conner, though, the smiled returned. They started busting out laughing together, while Kel tried to ring up the earrings. "Do you always get stuff like that when you go places?" Kellie smiled at him as she asked this question. She knew that being a famous bullrider had to have it's perks, but she knew that stuff like that had to be a tad annoying. Thinking as she finished ringing up his purchase, Kellie almost couldn't focus on what she was doing. This wasn't just any bullrider, it was Conner O'Malley. He was kinda famous, being like 4th in the world as far as points went. If Conner felt awkward or nervous, he sure wasn't showing it. He looked as calm as ever. The only emotion he had shown since he had been here was him laughing at that girl who had just been in the store. "The barbie was right about one thing. You did do good at the rodeo. I was there, entered in barrels. I didn't do too well, came in 4th." Kellie didn't know Conner too well, so she didn't know what were safe subjects to talk to him about. They both rodeod so she figured that was safe to talk about. She didn't want to embarrass herself too much.
Wishing somehow she could prolong his time in the store, Kellie rung up the earrings, and put them in a silver box she had pulled out from under the counter. She smiled, while her face got as pink as a georgia peach, when Conner stuck out his hand to shake hers. She slid her small hand into his big, rough one to shake it, doing so for a moment before pulling way. "I'm Kellie Montez, nice to meet you." Kellie stuck it in the plastic bag along with the receipt that she had just pulled off of the printer. Kellie knew she had to find out if this guy had a girlfriend, this was too much of a good opportunity not too. "You know, you're girlfriend is gonna love those. Is it your anniversary?" Kellie smiled sweetly, trying to use a subtle approach to get the answer she was looking for. She hoped he would scoff and tell her that he didn't have a girlfriend, but Kel wasn't so sure.

he wondered how she knew him, and the idea that his reputation had preceded him both excited and freaked him out. "I'm Kellie Montez, nice to meet you" she said as he reached out to take the plastic bag. conner liked the name, it had a nice ring to it, and it seemed to fit her well. the name reminded him of the summer for some reason, and he ached to be sprawled in the sand or jetskiing at a faraway lake. of course, in his wishful thinking he also imagined not being alone, but he had to shake his head to make the thoughts go away. as far as he knew she thought he was a creeper and just wanted him to leave. her next words made him smile a bit, feeling a bit like the end of a switched around pick up line victim. he then felt bad for automatically assuming she had devious intentions, and felt a trace of a blush heat up on his neck. after all, he could be twisting around her words to mean whatever he wanted them to mean, just because that's what he was wishing for. his eyes moved from the plastic bag to hers, and his fingers reached out to scratch the side of his cheek. "ah..." the silence filler broke off into a nervous laugh. "no girlfriend. they're actually for my mom, it's her birthday next week." his voice trailed off, and his brown eyes held hers. she had gorgeous eyes, and he seemed to be captured by them. the silent eye-catching couldn't have lasted for more than 2 seconds, but it felt like an eternity. in the backround conner heard the barbie queen's boots coming closer, apparently coming back for more. "hey conner, could you reach this belt for me?" conner turned reluctantly, breaking his gaze with kellie, to see what the barbie needed. she was pointing to a huge silver belt buckle with a black band. it couldn't have been more than a foot above her head, but for some reason she needed his help. conner held back the sigh and walked over, reaching out for the belt and handing it to her with little flourish. "there you go, ma'am." the polite ending was half upringing and half hoping she would take the formal hint and go away. unfortunetly, she didn't take the bait. "oh, it's amber." she said with a huge toothy smile. conner nodded and said "nice to meet you", before turning back around to go talk to kellie. apparently amber had other plans though, and trotted up to catch up with conner and put her belt on the counter for kellie to ring up. amber glowered at kellie, and conner felt the awkward situation tense up by the second. he felt like he should say or do something to make her leave, but couldn't bring himself to do it. after clearing his throat and sidestepping about two more feet away from the barbie subtly, he spoke again directly to kellie. "so... what about you?" he knew that if she was thinking the same thing he was she would understand his question and say whether or not she was in a relationship. if she asked what the heck he was talking about he would mumble something about favorite brand of earrings and skedaddle. do earrings even have brands? he thought with an internal grimace, but was interrupted by amber piping up again. "what about me?" she said with a squeaky girly voice, and conner forced down his manners and ignored her. [/blockquote][/blockquote] POST STATUS: finished TEMPLATE CREDIT TO: bby rie. Working nine to five, what a way to make a living, Barely getting by, it's all taking and no giving Kellie couldn't help but staring back and smiling like a tool when he caught her eyes. His eyes were so captivating, and gorgeous. There was no way she would let this guy out of the store, without getting his numbber, unless he had a girlfriend. If he did, Kellie sure as heck wasn't going to get in the middle of anything. She was a lot of things, but homewrecker was not one of them. Smiling to herself when he said he didn't have a girlfriend, Kellie felt the blush creeping back up on her face. "Aww, well that's sweet of you, I'll bet she'll like those." She didn't know what else to say at that exact moment. This guy was single, and sitting here flirting his brains out with her! And to top it all off, it was Conner O'Malley for crying out loud. Kellie now realized that this job did have it's perks.
She could feel the disgust creeping back up as the barbie started to come back for more. Kellie just rolled her eyes and made a face at the girl, as she asked Conner if he could reach a belt for her. Right, like she couldn't reach it herself. It was like 6 inches above her perfectly blonde little head. But whatever, if she wanted to act like a tool, Kellie would let her act like a tool. She wasn't embarrassing anyone but herself. Obiviously, Conner wasn't the least bit interested in her, so why would you even try? Couldn't she take a hint, and it was just making her look even worse than she already did. Kellie just shook her head and laughed out loud when Conner got the belt down for little miss perfect. His gentlemanly ways had gotten the best of him again.
When he said those words she had been waiting for, Kellie really couldn't help the smile that crept upon her face, or the redness in her face. He had just askd her if she had a boyfriend. Kellie really wanted to someone to pinch her, because she had to be dreaming. Unpopular girls like her didn't really get asked out on a daily basis by guys like Conner. It defied all rules and levels of the social hierarchy. But Kellie sure was enjoying every minute of it. She just snorted and tried to keep the laugh down, when it thought that Conner was actually speaking to her. "Nope, I'm not with anyone. Is..is there a certain reason you want to know?" Kellie looked down at the counter, and then up at him, smiling all the while. She didn't know whether he would give her a direct answer to this or not, but she hoped not, especially since the barbie was still here. Kellie knew she was gonna have to use pest control methods again. "Let me ring her up, so we can finish talking." She smiled that brilliant smile again, before ringing the barbie up, and bagging her purchase faster than speed racer could have. "Thanks, have a nice day." Kellie said forcefully, as the barbie left with a bewildered look, like she had just gotten slapped. "Anyways..." Then, Kellie felt the blush and smiled creeping up again. God, she was such a tool.

conner almost flinched at the words. she was really going to make him say it wasn't she? she was going to make she shyest guy in the world actually say 'yes. i would love for you to go out with me', but probably not in those exact words. conner felt a blush creeping up his neck and stood up straight again, readjusting his sleeve to waste time. he was going to have to think about what to say to that, what to say that wouldn't be too forward or too subtle. he didn't want her to think that he wasn't interested, but he didn't want her to think he was a ladies man. of course, based upon how much he had blushed in the past half hour, he had a pretty good idea that she knew he didn't do stuff like this very often. never, in fact. conner hadn't even kissed or gone out with a girl, and he liked to think it was because he was always so busy. in reality, he was just too terrified of rejection. the chime over the door went off, and conner realized that the barbie had left. he hadn't even paid attention to the fact that she had gotten rung up and walked out, and he wondered breifly if he had missed anything else important. he looked down to meet kellie's eyes again, just as she spoke. "Anyways..." she smiled at him and he felt like he was going to explode. it should have been illegal to have such an influence upon someone, and conner didn't really know how to take it. he drummed his fingers against the counter once and then spoke, his shoulders slightly hunched in his familiar cowboy posture. "uh, yeah. so when do you get off?" conner knew that was probably the last thing he should have said, smooth-guy wise, but his mouth was stuck saying stupid things. this time he didn't blush, but he looked over to examine the show saddles as if he might actually want one some day. he didn't think he could handle her eyes for one more second before saying everything he had wanted to say from the second he walked in here. and that was not an option in his shy-guy world. he didn't know how to act or what to do, and he hoped she wouldn't think he was an idiot and blow him off. Working nine to five, what a way to make a living, Barely getting by, it's all taking and no giving As soon as the words had come out of his mouth, Kellie had the answer on the tip of her tongue. She almost said it right away, but she didn't want to seem too desperate. Kellie could tell that Conner didn't do it this too often. But that was okay. It meant that he wasn't a ladie's man, like some of previous relationships. His innocence was actually cute, and the thought made Kellie giggle. While Conner studied the dhow saddle, which had suddenly became so interesting, Kellie did some studying of her own. But not of saddles, or anything close to that subject. She could see a bit of his farmer's tan, since when he leaned up against the counter, his hsirt slid down a little bit. And his arms, god, they bulged out under his green shirt like nobody's business. Kellie had to stop thinking like that. She snapped back to earth to answer Conner's oh-so-important question.
Kellie wanted to be careful saying what she was trying to say. She didn't want to accidentily say the wrong thing about going out with Conner, and risk hurting his feelings. That would not be a good thing if it happened. "Well, I get off around five, that's in about an hour. Did you wanna go catch dinner or a movie or something?" she could see that Conner was having some trouble with asking her these important and crucial questions, so instead, Kel would just ask him. He seemed to looked relieved that she was being helpless, and helping him out in this situation. Like before, Kellie really did think his innocence was one of the cutest things about him, personality wise.
To make it even easier for Conner, Kel ripped a piece of paper out of the notebook she had been writing the order list down in earlier. She grabbed a pen out of the silver mesh cup, and wrote seven numbers that should be very sacred and special to Conner. In other words, it was her phone number. Not that he seemed like the guy who would lose it, but he probably would be too nervous to call her anyway. But maybe he was a texter, who knows. Kellie wrote her name all pretty on the paper above her number, and walked around the counter, and up in front of Conner. She silently stuck the little scrap of paper in the chest pocket on his shirt, letting her hand briefly stay there and run down his chest for a second. "here's my number, call me or whatever later, or just swing by the store. I'm sure I'll still be there." Kellie knew she probably shouldn't do what she was about to, but she leaned up, almost standing on her toes, and kissed him on the cheek. She regretted it after she did it, not knowing how he would take it. Kellie winced as she looked in his eyes, searching for a reaction.

conner almost passed out. she actually thought he was worth her time, and would be willing to go out with him? he hadn't ever really been out on a date or hung out with any girl, and he felt like he was plunging headlong off a cliff into dark waters. but luckily, that's nothing compared to what he did everyday riding a bull, and so he simply stood up straighter and gave her a brilliant smile. "ah, yeah. that sounds great."he watched as she ripped off a piece of paper and scribbled something down onto it, most likely her number. conner rubbed one of his hands behind his neck while he waited, wondering if the two looked awkward to any of the other customers in the store. he stole a glance around, and immediately noticed an old woman glaring at him from above her walker. she shook her head at him like he was doing something wrong, and conner quickly looked back down, not sure what that was all about. by this time, kellie had finished writing and started walking. walking around the counter. towards him. conner stood up straight and looked down at her, confused with what she was doing. she reached up and put the paper in his chest pocket, her hands then brushing down his chest. his eyes flickered for a second, suddenly having the impulse to grab her and make out, but he figured since he didn't know how to do that it probably wasn't a good time. especially with the old lady still glaring (and probably shaking her finger too). conner swallowed despite his mouth going dry and was grateful that she soon broke the silence. "here's my number, call me or whatever later, or just swing by the store. I'm sure I'll still be there." he nodded in reply and agreement, figuring that would be the best plan of action. his parents were out and no one else was around to ask him what he was doing if he left again a mere half hour before he got home, so he didn't mind the wait. his family was so nosy about his business, and his mom was always trying to set him up with girls around town wh- his train of thought was thrown off when kellie suddenly rose up on her tiptoes and kissed him on the cheek. the contact was short and sadly, over, and conner's eyes widened as he looked down at her. his surprised reaction probably didn't do very much good, seeing as she now looked like she wished she hadn't kissed him, and that was not what he wanted. conner had very much liked the contact, and if it weren't for the old lady coming a few steps closer he really would have kissed her back. his thoughts whirling, he simply smiled down at her softly, not wide and toothy or anything, and reached up to touch the brim of his hat. "nice to meet you, kellie." his drawl was more intense when he spoke quietly, and that's exactly what he had done. conner turned to walk out of the store, leaving her standing there by the counter. right before he got to the door, he turned again and looked back at her. "see you at five, kels." he smiled again, more naturally and wider this time, and he let her nickname sit in the air for a few seconds. then he turned to leave, nodding politely in the direction of the old woman who looked as though she thought conner was the world's biggest rapist or something. seriously, she was throwing him looks that could kill - but he didn't care. right now, conner o'malley was feeling good. he walked out into the parking lot, already grabbing his phone out of his pocket. he unlocked the truck, got in, and took out the piece of paper from his pocket. he punched in kellie's number and then sent her a text immediately, saying 'i'll pick you up here, okay?' conner never really was one for texting in chatspeak, but with his full keyboard it only took him five seconds to type it up. the thought crossed his mind that kellie could probably still see him sitting in his truck doing something, and she probably thought he was being weird, but he didn't care. conner started up his engine with a roar and backed out of the parking space, his hat low and his radio loud.
